The nineteenth century marked a significant turning point in literary criticism with the advent of Russian formalism, which prioritized a detailed analysis of literary works through their linguistic and formal features. Historically, discussions on poetry among Muslims and Iranians predominantly focused on lexical and linguistic issues. Before the rise of formalism, literary research was primarily rooted in historical, psychological, and sociological approaches. Formalists posited that language naturally tends toward repetition and addiction through habitual use; hence, poets must actively deconstruct their habitual language to break free from normative patterns. This process, described by Schlofsky as involving acquaintance and deconstruction, aims to disrupt established norms and facilitate new aesthetic experiences.
The present study investigates the techniques and methods employed by Khuzestani poets Yousef Ali Mirshakkak and Vali Ahmad Baranpour, focusing on their poetry centered around the theme of sacred defense. Through textual analysis, semantic deviation is demonstrated to serve as the primary mechanism for establishing prominence and familiarity within their poetic compositions. This research provides insight into their unique poetic strategies and thematic expressions, highlighting the role of formalist techniques in shaping their works.
